Cotopaxi

Cotopaxi has one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world, starting at 5,000 m (16,400 ft).

The crater of Cotopaxi looks like a crescent moon, which is reflected in its name derived from Quechua and Aymara.

During the June 26, 1877 eruption, pyroclastic flows melted the entire ice cap of Cotopaxi.

In 2015, Cotopaxi experienced two large phreatic eruptions, marking a new phase of volcanic activity.

Cotopaxi is depicted in traditional paintings of the indigenous people of Tigua, highlighting its cultural significance.
