Ben Nevis

The name 'Ben Nevis' comes from the Gaelic 'Beinn Nibheis', meaning 'mountain of the Nevis'.

Ben Nevis presents the longest and steepest hill slope in Britain, rising 1,200 metres in about 2 kilometres.

The first recorded ascent of Ben Nevis was made on 17 August 1771 by James Robertson, an Edinburgh botanist.
