The Borneo rainforest is estimated to be around 140 million years old, making it one of the oldest rainforests in the world.

In November 2018, scientists reported the discovery of the oldest known figurative art painting, over 40,000 years old, in a cave on Borneo.

Borneo is the third-largest island in the world, with an area of 743,330 square kilometres (287,000 sq mi).

The largest river system in Borneo is the Kapuas River, which is 1,143 km (710 mi) long.

The term Borneo may derive from the Sanskrit word váruṇa, meaning either 'water' or Varuna, the Hindu god of rain and oceans.
