Tashkent

Tashkent's name is derived from the Turkic word 'tash' and the Persian word 'kent', meaning 'Stone City' or 'City of Stones'.

The Burgulik culture, the first known occupants of the Tashkent oasis, was an ancient pastoral society from the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages.

Tashkent was significantly affected by a powerful earthquake on April 26, 1966, which destroyed much of the old city and left over 300,000 residents homeless.

The Samarkand Kufic Quran, one of the oldest extant Qurans in the world, is held at the Center for Islamic Civilization in Tashkent.

In the summer of 1928, Tashkent showcased the first fully electronic TV set to the public, based on a method patented by Boris Grabovsky.
