Nyanza

Nyanza was the capital of the Kingdom of Rwanda from 1958 to 1962.

Nyanza is historically known for its yogurt and kefir, traditionally called ikivuguto.

The palace of the last umwami of Rwanda is located within walking distance of the town center.

Visitors to the king's palace may pet a cow and have their photos taken with it.

On the last Saturday of every month, the citizens of Nyanza participate in community service work projects called Umuganda.
