Bukhara

The name Bukhara may be derived from the Sanskrit word vihāra, meaning Buddhist monastery.

Bukhara was the capital of the Samanid Empire by 850 and the birthplace of Imam Bukhari.

The Kalyan minaret, also known as the Tower of Death, was historically used for executing criminals by throwing them off the top.

Bukhara is located on the Zeravshan River, at an elevation of 751 feet (229 meters).

Bukhara recorded a population of 279,200 in 2019, with a significant Tajik minority.
