Zaporizhzhia

The name Zaporizhzhia means 'beyond the rapids' in reference to its location downstream of the Dnieper Rapids.

Zaporizhzhia was founded in 1770 as a military fortress to protect against Crimean Tatar invasions.

The Dnieper splits Zaporizhzhia into two parts, with Khortytsia Island situated between them.
