Vejle

The name 'Vejle' comes from the Old Danish word 'wæthel', meaning 'ford' or 'wading place'.

During Viking times, the wetlands around Vejle were crossed at the Ravning Bridge, a 760-meter long wooden boardwalk built around 980 AD.

Vejle is known for the forested hills that rise to the north and south of the town and fjord.

Vejle was historically known as the 'Manchester of Denmark' due to its extensive textile mills during the Industrial Revolution.

Vejle's oldest extant building, St. Nicolai Church, was built in the mid-13th century and houses the preserved body of the Haraldskær bog woman.
