Uppsala was originally called Aros, meaning 'river mouth', due to its location at the mouth of the River Fyris.

Uppsala Cathedral is one of the largest in northern Europe, with towers reaching 118.70 metres (389.4 ft).

Uppsala is home to the oldest university in Scandinavia, founded in 1477.
