Ashgabat was renamed Poltoratsk from 1919 until 1927 after a local revolutionary.

Ashgabat grew on the ruins of the Silk Road city of Konjikala, which was first mentioned as a wine-producing village in the 1st-2nd century BC.

In 2013, Ashgabat was included in the Guinness Book of Records as possessing the world's highest concentration of white marble buildings.

Following independence in 1991, Ashgabat's architecture began to feature nearly universal facing with white marble.
