Homs

The modern name Homs is derived from the Latin name Emesus, which in turn comes from the Greek Émesa.

Excavations at the Citadel of Homs indicate that the earliest settlement at the site dates back to around 2300 BCE.

Homs is located along the east bank of the Orontes River in a particularly fertile area.

Homs was known for its seven gates during the Abbasid period, of which only two remain today.

Homs was the first Syrian city to have a substantial Muslim population after its conquest in 637 CE.
