Koidu

In 1995, Sierra Leone signed an agreement with Branch Energy Limited to operate the Koidu diamond mine in exchange for military support during the civil war.

Koidu Town is governed by a directly elected city council, with the mayor elected every four years.

Koidu town is home to the Kono people and is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Sierra Leone.

The Paul E. Farmer Maternal Center of Excellence opened in 2026 at the Koidu Government Hospital, housing the only neonatal intensive care unit in Sierra Leone.

Diamond Stars F.C., based in Koidu Town, was the first club outside Freetown to win the Sierra Leone National Premier League in 2012.
