Sheffield

Sheffield takes its name from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city centre in underground culverts.

The earliest evidence of human occupation in the Sheffield area was found at Creswell Crags to the east of the city.

Sheffield is estimated to contain around 4.5 million trees, giving it more trees per person than any other city in Europe.

The collapse of a dam wall in 1864 resulted in the Great Sheffield Flood, which killed 270 people.
