Santo Domingo

The name 'de los Colorados' refers to the Tsáchila ethnic group known for dyeing their hair with achiote extract.

Santo Domingo is located approximately 133 km west of Quito at an elevation of 625 metres.

The city lies in the foothills west of the Andes and is an important stopping point on the road from Quito to the Pacific coast.

Santo Domingo has a tropical rainforest climate, very close to a tropical monsoon climate.

The city experiences heavy flooding during the wet months from January to May, with about 2,450 millimetres of rain expected.
