Pretoria

Pretoria was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, who named it after his father Andries Pretorius.

Pretoria is known as the 'Jacaranda City' due to the approximately 60,000-70,000 Jacaranda trees that line its streets.

The first two Jacaranda trees in Pretoria were planted in 1888 by local gardener J.D. Cilliers.

Pretoria's Indians were ordered to move from Pretoria to Laudium on 6 June 1958.

The song 'Marching to Pretoria' refers to this city and was sung by British soldiers during the Boer War.
