Pietermaritzburg

Pietermaritzburg is home to the oldest football club in South Africa and the African continent, Savages FC PMB, founded in 1882.

The city was named after Piet Retief and Gerrit Maritz, two Voortrekker leaders, although neither of them ever reached the city.

Pietermaritzburg was the capital of the Colony of Natal until 1910, when it became part of the Union of South Africa.

The Pietermaritzburg borough council assumed a coat of arms in 1861, which featured an elephant standing on grass.
