Palermo

The original inhabitants of Palermo were the Sicani people, who arrived from the Iberian Peninsula.

Palermo is surrounded by a mountain range named after the city, with the tallest peak being La Pizzuta at about 1,333 m (4,373 ft).

Saint Rosalia is the patron saint of Palermo, and her feast day is celebrated on 14 July with a major procession.

Palermo has a large architectural heritage, notable for its many Arab-Norman buildings, which are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The Teatro Massimo, opened in 1897, is the biggest opera house in Italy and one of the largest in Europe.
