Mersin

Mersin was named after the aromatic plant genus Myrsine, which grows abundantly in the area.

The city was known as Zephyrion during the Ancient Greek period and was mentioned by numerous ancient authors.

The Chasms of Heaven and Hell in Mersin are two sinkholes formed from underground waters melting limestone, with the heaven sinkhole being 135 meters deep.

Mersin has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and mild, wet winters.

Mersin is home to a State Opera and ballet, making it the fourth such institution in Turkey.
