Bender

The town was first mentioned in 1408 as Tyagyanyakyacha in a document in Old Slavonic.

The Bender Constitution, accepted in 1710, established the principle of separation of powers almost 40 years before Montesquieu's Spirit of the Laws was published.

In 1920, one third of Bender's population was Jewish.

FC Tighina is the city's professional football club, which formerly played in the top Moldovan football league.

Bender is twinned with Beira, Mozambique and Montesilvano, Italy.
