Maturín

Maturín was founded by the Franciscan missionary Lucas de Zaragoza on December 7, 1760, but an earlier founding date of 1722 has been documented.

The name Maturín is believed to be derived from an indigenous chief who was murdered during a battle in 1718.

Maturín has been the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Maturín since 1958.
