Mandalay

Mandalay was founded in 1857 at the foot of Mandalay Hill to fulfill a prophecy about a metropolis of Buddhism.

The Kuthodaw Pagoda in Mandalay is known as the world's largest book for its stone scriptures inscribed with the entire Tipiṭaka.

Mandalay is located along the Sagaing Fault, which has been the site of significant earthquakes, including a magnitude 7.7 quake in 2025.

The population of Mandalay is projected to reach nearly 1.5 million by 2025, influenced by a massive influx of ethnic Han Chinese.

Mandalay is home to the first bolted rock climbing site in Myanmar, developed at Waterfall Hill since 2010.
