Fès

The name of the city in Arabic is فاس Fās, from which the English names Fez, Fès, and Fas are derived.

Fez was first founded in 789 as Madinat Fas on the southeast bank of the Jawhar River by Idris I.

The city was one of the largest in the world during the 12th century, with an estimated population of 200,000.

Fez was the only place in the world that fabricated the fez hat up until the late 19th century.

The primary language of the literary traditions of Fes is Arabic, while the daily spoken language is Moroccan Arabic.
