Liverpool

The name 'Liverpool' comes from the Old English words for thick or muddy water and a pool or creek.

Liverpool was first recorded as a town around 1190 and was initially farmland within the West Derby Hundred.

In 1830, Liverpool and Manchester became the first cities to have an intercity rail link.

Liverpool was the first city outside London to be awarded blue plaques by English Heritage in 1999.

The world's first integrated sewer system was constructed in Liverpool by James Newlands in 1847.
