Kandahar

The modern name 'Kandahar' is believed to have evolved from 'Scandar', a transformation noted by 16th-century historian João de Barros.

Excavations suggest that the region around Kandahar is one of the oldest known human settlements, with early farming villages dating back to around 5000 B.C.

Kandahar is located between the Arghandab River and the Tarnak River and covers a land area of 273 km2.

The Ahmad Shah Baba International Airport is the main airport for domestic and international flights in southern Afghanistan.

Most people in Kandahar are Pashtuns, with Pashto being the most widely used language, spoken by more than 98% of the population.
