Gabú

The town was originally named Nova Lamego, meaning 'New Lamego', after a town in Portugal.

Gabú was renamed in honor of the pre-colonial empire after Guinea Bissau's independence.

Gabú has the second largest market in Guinea-Bissau, trading coal, ceramics, and agricultural products.

Traders in Gabú come from as far away as Guinea, Senegal, Mali, and Sierra Leone.

Gabú experiences a dry season with dusty harmattan winds and a monsoonal wet season with heavy thunderstorms.
