Galle

Galle was known as Gimhathitha in ancient times, meaning 'port near the River Gin'.

The Galle Trilingual Inscription, erected in 1411, commemorates the second visit to Ceylon by the Chinese admiral Zheng He.

Galle features a tropical rainforest climate with average temperatures around 27 °C (81 °F) throughout the year.

The first mayor of Galle, Wijeyananda Dahanayake, was appointed in 1939 and later became the fifth Prime Minister of Ceylon.

Galle is home to some of the oldest leading schools in Sri Lanka, including twenty-nine government schools and five international schools.
