Gomel

The name Gomel is most plausibly derived from the stream Homeyuk, which flowed into the river Sozh.

Gomel was founded at the end of the 1st millennium AD on the lands of the Eastern Slavic tribal union of Radimichs.

In 1903, there was a violent pogrom against the Jewish population of Gomel.

Gomel recorded a temperature of 38.9 °C (102.0 °F) on 7 August 2010, the highest temperature ever recorded in Belarus.

Gomel is twinned with Radom, Poland, and Aberdeen, Scotland, but both ended their partnerships in 2022 due to Belarus's involvement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
