Shumen

The city was first mentioned as Šimeonis in 1153 by the Arab traveler Idrisi.

Shumen is home to the largest mosque in Bulgaria, known as the Tombul Mosque.

The Madara Horseman, a World Heritage Site and the only example of medieval rock art in Europe, is located near Shumen.

Shumen was called Kolarovgrad from 1950 to 1965 after the communist leader Vasil Kolarov.

Shumen Peak in Antarctica is named after the city of Shumen.
