Ahvaz was first recognized as an urban settlement under the name Taryana, which reflects the legendary name of Darius.

The Pol Siah (Black Bridge), built during World War II, was the first modern bridge over the Karun River.

Ahvaz has a subtropical hot desert climate, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 45 °C (113 °F).

Ahvaz International Airport served over 2.6 million passengers in 2016.
